A “step drawdown pumping test” is a groundwater well test where pumping is increased in stages (steps) over time. At each step, the pumping rate is held constant long enough for water levels to respond, and the drawdown (the drop in the water level) is measured. The goal is to evaluate how the aquifer and well behave under different pumping rates and to estimate hydraulic properties such as transmissivity and storativity, as well as well efficiency and potential non-linear effects.
How it’s typically performed
The test usually includes: (1) a pre-pumping period to measure baseline water level; (2) several pumping steps (e.g., low, medium, high flow), each with a fixed duration; (3) measurement of drawdown during each step (often using a pressure transducer or observation well); and (4) sometimes a recovery period after pumping stops to observe how the water level returns.
